Davoi drugoi
In 1802, a European ambassador in St Petersburg described a mass baptism beside a hole in the ice in the frozen river Neva.
The bearded Russian patriarch conducting the ceremony dropped an infant whose body plunged into the depths, never to be seen again. 'Davoi drugoi' intoned the archbishop impassively, 'Pass me another'
Does it seem that in your Company, history repeats itself? Does it ever seem that you are locked in some real-life version of 'Groundhog day' where mediocre results are accepted as the norm, and dismissed, almost like the archbishop whose only response to the disaster was, 'pass me another!'
It does not have to be this way. It is not a case, I am sure, that you have the wrong people. Individually, I am sure, each of them is very capable in the job they do. However, collectively, they may not be realising the potential you require if you are to meet your stretching business goals. Sometimes you may wonder if each of them is thinking, 'if it wasn't for all the others, I could be doing a first class job!'
Many companies have concluded that the answer lies in sending their key people away on external training courses when they learn how different things could be, only to be frustrated when a few weeks later, they return to the Company norms
To try initiate a change in culture by 'seeding it' with enlightened individuals is like, in the words of the song, 'trying to solve an algebra problem by chewing bubblegum!'
